CARLEX AI™ is the clinical documentation engine inside Africa Care. Its job is simple to describe: listen to the consultation, draft the paperwork, and hand it back to the clinician to check. The part that matters most is the last one — and it's the part we designed everything else around.
Four steps, every time
Every CARLEX draft follows the same path, and it never skips a step.
- The clinician dictates. Speak — or type — the consultation as you normally would. CARLEX captures what you provide, nothing more.
- CARLEX drafts. Your input is structured into a draft clinical note. From the same consultation it can also draft a script, a referral letter or a sick note.
- The clinician reviews. The draft is fully editable. You correct anything that's wrong. This step cannot be skipped.
- The clinician approves. Only on your approval does the content enter the patient record. You remain the author.
What CARLEX does
- Structures a dictated consultation into a draft SOAP note.
- Drafts prescriptions, referral letters, sick notes and discharge summaries for you to review.
- Suggests ICD-10 codes against the South African PMB master list, for you to confirm.
- Works across five official South African languages.
- Learns from the corrections you make, so your future drafts fit the way you write.
What CARLEX does not do
This list matters as much as the first one.
- It does not diagnose a patient.
- It does not treat, or decide on treatment.
- It does not prescribe — it drafts a script that a clinician must review and sign.
- It does not make clinical decisions or replace professional judgement.
- It does not communicate conclusions directly to a patient, and it provides no emergency assistance of any kind.
AI can make mistakes. That's why you sign.
CARLEX produces drafts, and drafts can be wrong. A draft may be incomplete, may mishear a drug name, or may suggest a code that doesn't fit the case. That's precisely why review by the treating clinician is a required step rather than a recommended one — and why every draft stays editable until it's approved.
When you correct a draft, the corrected version — not the original — is what enters the record, and your correction is used to improve future drafting for you.
Whose data, under whose authority
Patient information is processed on the authority of the treating clinician or practice, who remains the responsible party under POPIA. Africa Care acts as an operator, processing that information on their behalf. The full detail is in our Privacy Policy and the AI use policy in section 09 of our Terms & Conditions.
What it feels like in practice
The difference shows up in the room. Instead of splitting your attention between the patient and a keyboard, you talk to the patient. When the consultation ends, the draft is waiting: read it, fix what needs fixing, sign it, and call the next patient. The paperwork still gets done — properly, and with your name on it — it just stops being the thing your day is built around.
